Inspirasi Story - This story took place when the Muslims had just migrated to Madinah. At that time, the city was struck by a severe drought and water shortage.
1. The Problem: The Jewish-Owned Well
The only reliable water source left was the Well of Rummat. However, it was owned by a man who sold the water at an exorbitant price. The poor struggled just to get enough water to drink.
2. Usman’s "Bold" Offer
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, "Whoever buys the Well of Rummat will be granted Paradise."
Usman immediately took action. He offered to buy the well, but the owner refused to sell the whole thing. Eventually, they agreed on a unique deal: Usman bought half-ownership of the well.
- Day One: The well belonged to Usman (Water was provided for free to everyone).
- Day Two: The well belonged to the owner (He continued to sell his water).
3. A Brilliant Charity Strategy
On Usman's "turn," he announced that all residents of Madinah should take as much water as they needed for two days—completely free of charge.
The result? On the second day (the seller's turn), not a single person came to buy water. The seller eventually gave up and sold the remaining half-ownership to Usman at a low price.
A Legacy That Never Ends
Here is the most incredible part:
- The well was endowed (Waqf) to the Muslim community forever.
- Over the centuries, date palm trees grew around the well and were maintained by various governments.
- The proceeds from the dates were saved in a bank account under the name "Usman bin Affan," which is still managed by the Saudi government today.
- That money is used to support orphans, build hotels, and maintain public facilities in Madinah.
Key Lessons:
- Charity Isn't Just "Cash": Usman donated a productive asset (Waqf) that continues to provide benefits for over a millennium.
- Smart Generosity: He used his business intelligence to help others without resorting to illegal means.
- Faith in God’s Promise: He wasn't afraid of going poor by buying an expensive asset only to give it away for free.
